Digital leadership training has been growing in popularity in recent years, and with the current global shift to remote work, it has become even more important. However, not all digital leadership training is created equal. To truly make a lasting impact, training must be relevant, engaging — providing opportunities for application in the real-world.
One example of digital leadership training that effectively incorporates these principles is the module developed by Skillpod. The "Building your Team" module is designed to support leaders how to effectively build their team using the Tuckman team model.
The 10 minute-micro module focuses on the five stages of team development and what the team needs from their leader at each stage of this model.
Learners are provided foundational information about the Tuckman team model and what teams look like at each stage. Learners are encouraged to identify the stage of their team based on their learning.
Learners are then invited to reflect on what is happening within their team that puts them at the stage they identified, and pinpoint what needs to happen to move them onto the next stage.
Having learned about the dynamics of teams at different stages of development, this reflection activity enables experiential learning.
Learners are then presented with information about the role they need to play to support their team in their current state, and enable the shift to the next stage of team development.
Learners are presented with their reflections and prompted to identify an action to take their team to the next stage. They are encouraged to note down how they will know they have reached the next stage.
This module demonstrates the power of experiential, micro online learning. Learners are able to engage in short, focused activities that teach them new knowledge, skills, and techniques, and then immediately apply them in a safe and supportive environment. By applying newly acquired knowledge and skills to real-life scenarios, learners are better prepared to take their learnings and apply them in their daily work.
