Heron Group, a leading NZ marine construction company, approached Skillpod to develop a leadership capability solution suitable for frontline leaders on their construction sites. The need for such a solution stemmed from significant growth and expansion in recent years and a commitment to health and safety. This prompted a desire from the management team to provide frontline leaders with the skills and knowledge required to support continued growth and success in what is now a very competitive environment.
The solution
Being geographically dispersed, Heron Construction Group were looking for a solution that enabled consistency and equitable access to leadership development opportunities. Working closely with Heron Group, Skillpod identified suitable micro-elearning modules from the templated learning library and tailored the content specifically for the construction industry. By embedding content relevant to the industry and organisation, the tailored modules give leaders the opportunity to lead from the same playbook and adopt shared approaches to their practice.

Bringing it all together
To ensure that the content was easily accessible to leaders, Skillpod created a landing page for the framework. The landing page provided the leaders with a clear overview of why the learning was important and its relevance to their role at Heron Construction Group. It also provided guidance on the order in which to complete the learning.
The leadership framework was broken down into three sections — communication and relationships, building and leading teams, and personal effectiveness. Each section comprised three activity types, including micro-learning modules, a personal reflection, and a prompt to have a conversation with their manager or HR to discuss their learnings.

The leadership framework was piloted by a group of leaders in Whangarei, who provided valuable feedback that the micro-learning modules and support materials provided their leadership team with the confidence that they were on the right track and together could make a difference. They were able to develop a common language around leadership and what it meant for them in their environment.
The Heron learners found particular value in the content related to avoiding conflict and dealing with challenging situations which generated discussion. They took their new knowledge relating to these topics onto the worksite, talked about their experiences about what they had learnt, and as a result, deepened their understanding.
The Outcome
Heron Construction is committed to their people, continuous improvement and ensuring high-quality leadership. They utilise the Leadership micro-learning modules as part of their capability development framework to develop leaders. The modules not only provide knowledge to the learner but also activities and strategies to put their learning into practice. The modules meet the needs of Heron Construction as they allow flexibility of delivery, are realistic in size and scope, and provided value for money. Heron Construction are developing leaders who can bring their team along on the journey.

Leadership is no longer about being directive or authoritative. The modern workforce requires leadership that is relationship based and shows interest in the development of its people.
You can make this training yours by tailoring the content for your specific organisational challenges.
